I've been playing this new MMORPG called TERA Online.
You read that right, I'm playing an MMORPG. I usually hate hate hate MMORPGs but god damn it, this one sucked me in. Mostly because there's an entire race of lolis called Elin, and they're all god damn cute as hell.
That's not entirely true. I actually became interested in the game when I saw a friend playing it. I was immediately in awe at how amazing the graphics are. The detail that the developers put into the expansive environments in this game certainly rivals that of current single-player RPGs. It's amazing.
I've always loved the concept of exploring a massive fictional world, which means I should love MMORPGs. However, I'm generally turned off by the gameplay, which is often full of repetitive combat and countless sidequests that get stale and boring very fast. I'll admit that TERA Online isn't much of an exception, but yet I constantly find myself coming back for more. Not once have I felt bored playing this game. The only thing that keeps me from playing more, is this pesky little thing called reality. What a jerk.
Most people seem to be agreeing that TERA Online‘s gameplay puts it a step above other games of its kind. Touting itself as "The first true action MMORPG," gameplay consists largely of performing various skills. Each skill has a cooldown time, but you'll quickly get to the point where you have a number of skills to choose from, and thus won't have to worry so much about that, as you'll always have something to do. I've also heard that the game features a unique PvP system, though I can't speak for that since I'm too scared to play PvP.
Currently, the game is $50, $10 more if you want the Collector's Edition which gives you some cool items and a lion mount. The monthly subscription fee is $15 and the first month is free.
